AMD presents Ryzen 7000X3D and wants to dominate Intel with it
Thanks to the 3D vertical cache technology, the new processors should outperform the currently fastest gaming processor i9-13900K. The CPUs should be available from February.
The new line-up consists of three processors: the 8-core / 16-thread Ryzen 7 7800X3D, the 12-core / 24-thread Ryzen 9 7900X3D and the 16-core / 32-thread Ryzen 9 7950X3D. The smallest CPU has a base clock of over 4.0 GHz and a boost of up to 5.0 GHz. The middle one clocks from 4.4 to 5.6 GHz. According to AMD, the clock frequencies of the largest CPU range from 4.2 to 5.7 GHz. The thermal power dissipation (TDP) is specified by the manufacturer as 120 watts for all models.
In its presentation, AMD advertises the 7800X3D as the fastest gaming processor in the world. This suggests that this processor should deliver the best performance in games of the three new ones, despite the lower boost. Compared to its direct predecessor, the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, AMD claims between 10 and 25 per cent more frames per second (FPS) in 1080p resolution. The processor should particularly shine in CPU-intensive games at lower resolutions.
The new flagship, the 7950X3D, should also offer plenty of gaming performance. According to AMD, it beats the currently fastest gaming processor i9-13900K by 9 to 24 per cent in four games. But even in applications that benefit from many threads, the performance should be greater than that of the Intel competitor. For file compression and workloads in DaVinci Resolve, the performance is said to be between 24 and 52 per cent higher.
As these are manufacturer's specifications, they should be treated with caution. Independent tests will show what they actually achieve. The Ryzen 7000X3D CPUs should be available from February 2023 and are compatible with the current AM5 mainboards following a BIOS update. The price is not yet known.
What is 3D V-Cache?
The Zen4 3D Vertical Cache is a 64 megabyte (MB) L3 cache that is located above the Core Complex Die (CCD). Together with the 32 MB L3 cache on the CCD itself, this results in a total of 96 MB L3 cache. With the Ryzen 7 5800X3D, AMD has shown that the processors benefit from this particularly in gaming tasks. In contrast to this first generation with 3D V-Cache, AMD is now also applying the technology to CPUs with a higher core count. The manufacturer is therefore appealing to a wider audience.
The memory size specifications are exciting. The smallest has a combined L2 and L3 cache totalling 104 MB. In purely mathematical terms, the larger ones should have between 204 and 208 MB, as they have two CCDs. However, they "only" have 140 and 144 MB. This is because the V-cache is only located on one CCD.
More economical Ryzen 7000 processors also presented
In addition to the new high-end CPUs, AMD has also unveiled three models with 65 watts TDP: the 6-core / 12-thread Ryzen 5 7600, the 8-core / 16-thread Ryzen 7 7800 and the 12-core / 16-thread Ryzen 9 7900. All models come with a cooler.
The maximum output is between 90 and 120 watts, depending on the model. This means they clock lower than their larger siblings in the 7000X series, but cost less. The 7600 achieves clock frequencies of up to 5.1 GHz. The 7700 reaches 5.3 GHz and the 7900 5.4 GHz.
The CPUs should be available from 10 January.
