When folded, the Honor Magic V2 is barely recognisable as a foldable smartphone. It is currently the thinnest and lightest of its kind.

Honor has presented the Magic V2 in China. The manufacturer is setting new standards in terms of size and weight with the foldable smartphone. It is only 9.9 millimetres thick when folded. And that's two weeks before Samsung unveils the next generation of the Galaxy Z Fold.

Less than one centimetre

With its 9.9 millimetres, the Honor Magic V2 is the first foldable smartphone to be less than one centimetre thick. With a weight of 231 grams, it is also currently the lightest foldable. This is also shown by the following comparison with selected current competitors:

  • Oppo Find N2: 14.6 mm, 233 g
  • Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4: 14.2 mm, 263 g
  • Google Pixel Fold: 12.1 mm, 283 g
  • Huawei Mate X3: 11.8 mm, 239 g

Conventional smartphones are still thinner and lighter. However, the Magic V2 comes very close to or even surpasses the larger models. The Galaxy S23 Ultra is only one millimetre thinner at 8.9 millimetres and, at 234 grams, even three grams heavier than the foldable from Honor.

However, this only applies to the version of the Magic V2 with a back made of plastic vegan leather. The version with glass is 10.1 millimetres thick when folded and weighs 237 grams.

Samsung has the thickest foldable smartphone available in Europe in the above list. On 26 July, the company will unveil its successor model, the Galaxy Z Fold 5. According to current rumours, however, it will be slightly thicker and heavier than the current Z Fold 4.

Equipment leaves nothing to be desired on paper

When the Honor Magic V2 is folded, you are looking at a 6.43-inch screen with a resolution of 2376 × 1060 pixels. The inner touchscreen measures 7.92 inches and has 2344 × 2156 pixels. In both cases, it is an OLED display with a refresh rate of up to 120 hertz.

A quick rundown of the other features:

  • Snapdragon 8 Gen 2
  • 16 GB of RAM
  • 256 GB, 512 GB or 1 TB storage space
  • 50 megapixel main camera (f/1.9)
  • 50-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera (f/2.0)
  • 20-megapixel telephoto camera (f/2.4)
  • 16-megapixel front camera (f/2.2)
  • 5000 mAh battery, 66 watt Honor SuperCharge
  • Android 13 with MagicOS 7.2

Price and availability

Honor has only presented the Magic V2 for China for the time being. However, sales in other countries are likely. This is also supported by the fact that the manufacturer has already distributed test devices outside of China. However, official confirmation or exact dates are still pending. The Chinese prices range between around 1100 and 1500 euros/francs - depending on the storage capacity. Experience shows that taxes and transport costs are added outside of China, which increase the price somewhat.

As a primary school pupil, I used to sit in a friend's living room with many of my classmates to play the Super NES. Now I get my hands on the latest technology and test it for you. In recent years at Curved, Computer Bild and Netzwelt, now at Digitec and Galaxus.
