If you want to update AirPods without an Apple device, you have to go to the Apple Store
Apple regularly releases new firmware for its headphones. But if you use AirPods without an Apple device and don't have an iOS device nearby, you're left empty-handed. Apple now has a solution to this problem - and it's a cumbersome one.
The firmware of Apple's AirPods, AirPods Pro and AirPods Max is updated automatically when you connect them to an iOS device. However, if you don't use Apple's headphones with an Apple device, you have a problem: there are no firmware updates. This is because all Apple headphones are configured via the settings of Apple devices, there is no separate app.
The manufacturer from California has now recognised this problem. In the latest support article, Apple therefore advises customers who do not have an Apple device nearby to make an appointment at the Apple Store or with an authorised Apple reseller to update their AirPod headphones. An update combined with a walk in the park.

The latest April update in the aforementioned Apple support article is version 5E133 for AirPods and replaces the one from January. The update is available for the following headphones:
- Second generation AirPods (without suffix)
- Third generation AirPods (without suffix)
- First generation AirPods Pro
- Second generation AirPods Pro
- AirPods Max
According to Apple, this will fix bugs and make improvements - whether it's worth going to an Apple Store for this remains to be seen. What is clear, however, is that Android users with Apple headphones should also update them from time to time.
