At the Tudum live show in Brazil, Netflix finally showed the first trailers of One Piece, Squid Game 2 and The Last Airbender. But that’s not all.

Netflix is good at making the world seem hunky dory. The Californian streaming giant demonstrates this at its annual Tudum show, named after the «Tuduuuuummmm» sound before each in-house production.

It took place in Brazil, where stars including Chris Hemsworth, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jenna Ortega announced new trailers, behind-the-scenes videos and key release dates for upcoming series to thunderous applause. And anyone who wanted to could watch the almost three-hour event via streaming:

Netflix’s good mood doesn't come out of the blue. The California based company are unlikely to win any popularity awards at present. At least not since you’re charged extra money for sharing your streaming account.(/page/account-sharing-bei-netflix-kostet-jetzt-das-musst-du-wissen-27926). For those who doubted Netflix’s plans (me included) you’ll be surprised to hear that market researchers say subscription numbers in the U.S. have actually increased (article in German) since the introduction of paid-account sharing.

Three cheers for Netflix’s business and to the upcoming movies and series. Here’s an overview:

First trailer for the live-action adaptation of One Piece

Most recently, Netflix embarrassed itself with its less than faithful live-action adaptation of the anime Cowboy Bebop. One Piece is meant to get it all right with one of the most popular Shōnen anime in the world and according to colleague Kevin it’s also very suitable for newcomers to the genre(/page/vier-gruende-wieso-du-auch-nach-25-jahren-mit-one-piece-anfangen-solltest-25242). This is because Eiichiro Oda, the One Piece creator, had a big influence on the adaptation. In a letter to fans, he even promised that Netflix wouldn’t launch the series until he was satisfied. Well then: the first real trailer’s here, most fans are freaking out with joy and, yes, the series has a release date.

First teaser for the live-action adaptation of The Last Airbender

Fans of The Last Airbender who’re waiting for the first moving footage of the live-action adaptation of the Nickelodeon animated series are just as sceptical. For two reasons. First, The Sixth Sense director M. Night Shyamalan really blew the first live-action adaptation in 2010. Second, animation creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko left the production because of creative differences with Netflix. Not a good sign, right? The teaser above shows little except for a very vague release date. But the first images of the four main characters have been released. See here.

Cast announcements for Squid Game 2 and a reality show

Everyone was talking about whether Squid Game, the surprise hit of 2021 from South Korea, was an intelligent social critique or mere voyeuristic hypocrisy. It’s no surprise then that Netflix plans a second series for one of its most successful shows. However, there wasn’t much new to see. In a short announcement video, the streaming giant presented the new cast but not the release date. What we do know is that the Squid Game reality show will launch on Netflix in November. Watch the trailer here:

Netflix takes a shine to South Korea

Netflix is putting everything on South Korea. To be exact, they’re investing 2.5 billion dollars over the next four years and they want you to know about it. It’s no surprise that since the release of Oscar-winning film Parasite South Korean productions have been booming internationally. In the sizzle reel above, Netflix want to get you hooked, and they do a pretty good job. I like the crazy ideas in the new setting of South Korea. They counter the ubiquitous Hollywood heavyweight. And so they should.

Announcement of the second season of Wednesday

Since the beginning of the first season, she has been hounded, haunted, and her iconic dance has gone viral, says Wednesday in her mopey, monotone voice. «It’s been pure torture. Thank you.» In the announcement video, we don’t find out anything about the second season, nor when it’ll be released. Just that there will be one. So that’s something.

Sarah Connor joins Stranger Things

A lot of cheers could be heard in the audience when Arnold Schwarzenegger announced that his former co-star, Linda Hamilton, would be joining the cast of the fifth season of Stranger Things. She’s played Sarah Connor three times in the Terminator franchise. Let’s hope she doesn’t take the robot apocalypse with her to Hawkins.

Behind the scenes of Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon

What Avatar is for James Cameron, Rebel Moon is supposed to be for the 300 and Justice League director Zack Snyder. His best work. His creative baby he was pregnant with for 20 years and is now finally allowed to bring to celluloid. The worlds, characters and stories are all his own ideas, they’re not taken from any literary works. In doing so, Snyder promises a gigantic project, an epic that will combine action, fantasy and science fiction in a way we can’t imagine in our wildest dreams.

First teaser trailer for Money Heist spin-off BERLIN

Still today, Money Heist – the original called Casa de Papel – is one of the most successful Netflix series ever. A whole five seasons made up this Spanish production. Plus there was a South Korean (what else) adaptation that, in terms of content, had nothing to do with the story or characters of the original. BERLIN is therefore the first proper spin-off and revolves around the charismatic fan favourite Andrés de Fonollosa, better known by his code name Berlín. This time he wants to pull off a coup in Paris. In doing so, falls in love with the wife of the person he actually wants to rob. It has an Ocean’s 11 feel to it, doesn’t it?

First trailer for the literary adaptation of 3 Body Problem

The series adaptation of the 3 Body Problem novel might just be one of Netflix’s most ambitious science fiction productions. The novel was written by Chinese author Liu Cixin. He became known when he published the first book in his Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy in 2007. That is the 3 Body Problem. Cixin has combined complex scientific concepts with political, philosophical, and ethical questions. In these, humanity is confronted with its own existence, its role in the universe, and the consequences of its choices.

The story is initially about Earth being threatened by an alien civilisation. However, the threat was triggered by the first contact itself. One of Cixins philosophical ideas. He puts forward the idea that the universe is similar to a dark forest, where every living being has to be quiet to avoid being discovered by predators. The best protection? Never look for other animals. And yet humankind can’t help but go searching. That’s nature for you.. Life looking for life. Always.
