Pia's Picks: furniture on wheels

Furniture and decor on wheels are a practical solution for many living areas and work spaces. Did you know they can look good too?

Recently, one particular feature stuck out to me and I’m pretty sure they make any piece of furniture better. I’m talking about wheels. Take a washing basket. Wheels can transform it into a mobile base and offer numerous advantages:

  • Ergonomics: wheels enable you to move tables, washing baskets or plants without having to lift them. This is ideal for anyone who regularly rearranges their home because it’s less physically straining.
  • Adaptability: furniture on wheels offers flexibility in your room design. Depending on the requirements, you can easily move it around. My colleague Natalie, for example, uses them as storage for her hobby equipment.
  • Multifunctionality: furniture on wheels can be used in different rooms, such as the studio, office, children’s room or living room.
  • Space saving: when not in use, furniture on wheels can be easily pushed to the side or stowed away in a corner, saving space.
  • Protective function: soft wheels reduce the risk of scratches and damage to the floor, as the furniture doesn’t have to be pushed or pulled.

The brand HAY also seems to put a lot of things on wheels. After some time on the market, it’s given their popular boxes, Colour Crates matching wheels. The boxes are made from 100 per cent recycled plastic waste, can be stacked in all kinds of combinations and are used for storage and organisation on shelves, tables or in cupboards.

The Colour Crate wheels work on a simple plug-in principle and have two stopper wheels. Although they were specially designed for the HAY Colour Crates, you can transfer this ingenious idea to other objects. Simply search for suitable furniture wheels and take the opportunity to give your chosen piece that certain something.

If you don’t like doing it yourself, I have some alternatives that roll in with the solution already installed. Take the laundry basket on wheels from HTI-Living, for example. Or the Block serving trolley from Norman Copenhagen, designed by Simon Legald. It consists of two trays on four round timbers made of solid ash wood and can travel silently through your home thanks to its wheels.
