The iconic lava lamp shines in a new trend colour
Rotterdam-based designer Sabine Marcelis has created a limited edition called "Bordeaux Astro Lava Lamp" for VitraHaus Loft. The collector's item will be available soon.
After their success in 2023 with a yellow lava lamp, Dutch designer Sabine Marcelis and lava lamp inventor Mathmos have collaborated again to create a new collector's edition.
Marcelis' design is characterised by a deep Bordeaux red, a matt tinted surface and an elegant silhouette.

Trend colour burgundy
The colour is no coincidence: the lamp was designed to blend seamlessly into the dark red bedroom of Marcelis' loft installation, which is currently on display in Weil am Rhein. "I'm a big fan of Mathmos' iconic lamps and already had a lot of fun with our first joint design," says Marcelis in the media report. "It was just natural for me to integrate a lava lamp into the VitraHaus Loft bedroom, and I am delighted that we can present a new, limited edition of the lava lamp that matches the colour of the occasion."
Burgundy is also on trend. This became clear at this year's Milan Design Week. The exhibitions by Dimore Studio or Gucci were already characterised by the delicious cherry red colour.
In addition to the trendy colour, the matt look of the lamp is striking: Not only the glass, but also the lacquer finish is matt. The metal base and the cap of the lamp are made of hand-turned aluminium and painted in Bordeaux. A matching braided cable and a black switch and plug round off the design.

The limited edition of 1000 pieces for around 175 euros will be available internationally from October 2024 via the Mathmos website. Each lamp is numbered and comes in a cherry red box designed by Marcelis.
