These are the game highlights for 2024

Spanning games from open-world Star Wars to farming simulators with mechs and skate games full of demons – 2024 truly has something in store for everyone.

My list gets longer every year. This must simply be down to the fact that more amazing games keep coming out every year. I fought myself through the game jungle and picked out the most promising titles for you.

Sovereign Syndicate

Explore the opium dens, brothels and pompous estates across the filthy backstreets of a steampunk Victorian London. Battles are carried out with a tarot card system and you can choose between three predefined characters.

War Hospital

Polish studio Brave Lamb calls it a «society survival game». In War Hospital, you’re in charge of a British field hospital during World War I. You manage staff, ensure everyone’s well rested and improve the camp so that more patients can be taken in and cared for. Resource management is an essential part of gameplay, as is making tricky decisions that are literally a matter of life and death. This is also the case when you need to decide which soldiers are sent back to the front, which go back to base and which are discharged.

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown

This isn’t a remake, but a new release based on the debut title of the series. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is a 2.5D platformer game. You play Sargon, a warrior from a clan called The Immortals and travel to the cursed city of Mount Qaf to rescue kidnapped Prince Ghassan. Just like in the series, you do this by means of spectacular acrobatics and fights.

The Last of Us Part II Remastered

Three years on, you get to relive Ellie’s vendetta in this remastered version. Expect a higher frame rate, higher-resolution textures, more details for distant objects and improved shadows. The haptic feedback and adaptive triggers of the dual-sense controller are also used in the PS5 version. Some cut sequences have also been added. There’s also the new No Return survival mode, in which you get to compete against humans and monsters with various characters. There’s also a free play guitar mode.

Another Code Recollection

These are two completely reworked adventure puzzle games originally released for Wii and DS. The graphics have been spruced up, the voice acting revised, new puzzles added and there’s also an optional hint system. The first part is about 13-year-old Ashley, who receives a letter from her deceased father. This leads her to a remote island where she encounters a ghost and tricky puzzles. The sequel is all about her mother’s past.

Graven

After over two years, the retro shooter Graven is leaving Early Access. Its gameplay’s reminiscent of classics in the style of Hexen. Wielding a mace and armed with magic weapons, you slash your way through unusual enemies. There are also numerous puzzles to solve; sometimes requiring brainpower, sometimes skill.

Roots of Yggdrasil

Roots of Yggdrasil is a city builder game with roguelike elements. Following Ragnarök, the fall of the gods, the world’s trapped in a destructive loop. Your task is to restore the Nine Kingdoms to their former greatness. This is done on expeditions where you compile card decks, build settlements and complete quests. But Ginnungagap, the empty space that devours everything, is hot on your trail.

Enshrouded

An open fantasy world, hostile factions, crafting and base building form the central elements of Enshrouded. It’s the next addition to the open-world survival genre courtesy of German studio Keen Games. Up to 16 people can together face the cruel hordes lurking in the world of Embervale.

Tekken 8

The last time I played Tekken must’ve been on the PS2. I’m liking the decision by Game Director Katsuhiro Harada to focus on more «aggressiveness». In other words, giving your opponent a good walloping is more highly rewarded than applying more defensive gameplay. True to the motto: you snooze, you lose. There’s also a new Heat system that lets you do new moves. And then there’s the return of Rage mode from part 7. There are 32 confirmed characters to choose from so far.

Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth

Ready for your Hawaii holidays? Then slap on some sunscreen and get ready to embark on Ichiban Kasuga’s next crazy adventure. It leads the former Yakuza to picturesque Honolulu, where he sets out to find his mother who’s presumed dead. Kiryu, who starred in Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name, is also part of the cast.

Palworld

Pokémon with guns. That was my first thought when I saw the trailer for Palworld. Turns out I wasn’t entirely wrong. In this game, you also collect heaps of cute monsters and let them fight for you. The only difference is that some of them carry rocket launchers on their shoulders and you can control them like mechs. You can alternatively force them to do gardening or make them work in factories. The game takes the already meagre logic of Pokémon to the extreme. But it definitely looks crazy enough to give it a whirl once it’s available in Early Access.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League

Even though the game was postponed several times and the previews are anything but flattering, the hope that Rocksteady will deliver an entertaining action game hasn’t been shattered. You get to take on the Justice League alone or with up to three friends. The Suicide Squad characters all have different abilities and the potential to be quite the explosive combination when they join forces.

Helldivers 2

The first part released in 2015 was a surprisingly entertaining cooperative space shooter. In the role as the eponymous Helldiver, you land on dusty planets, butcher aliens and try to recover specific items. This successor zooms in on the action, but remains chaotic at its core. I can’t wait.

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

Don’t Nod, the creators of Jusant and Life is Strange, whisk you away to an alternative version of 17th century North America. There, you accompany ghost hunter couple Antea Duarte and Red mac Raith as they investigate supernatural occurrences. In the process, Antea herself turns into a ghost. As always in Don’t Nod games, your decisions influence the plot.

Skull and Bones

In this open-world game, you get to unlock and customise countless pirate ships and take on other players who can’t wait for you to fire a broadside at them. The pitch of Skull and Bones still sounds promising – despite its umpteenth postponement. We’ll soon find out whether it’ll materialise anytime soon. In my annual forecast, I’m pretty sure it will.

Black Myth: Wukong

Claims of a toxic work environment at Chinese indie studio Game Science has dampened anticipation for this next big Soulslike. What a shame. The bits I got to play at Gamescom were extremely promising. As an ape-man, you fight your way through picturesque landscapes and face terrifying bosses. These include a tiger that works out for at least eight hours a day.

Warhammer 40.000: Space Marine 2

I’m particularly looking forward to this game. I already binged the first part, in which you get to butcher hordes of space orcs with a chainsaw in the boots of a legendary Space Marine. Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2

In 2021, the game moved from Studio Hardsuit Labs to The Chinese Room. It seems publisher Paradox wasn’t satisfied with the work done previously. I’m curious what the makers of Dear Esther and Little Orpheus will do with the popular vampire brand. The predecessor was a one-of-a-kind role-playing game, despite the bugs.

Once Human

This game is being hyped to the max on social media. I had a quick look at the beta. The concept of an open-world survival game set in a post-apocalyptic world with MMO components looks very promising. The design’s appealing and there’s loads to do, but the fact that the beta provides hardly any space to build your own house annoys me a little. Hopefully, the zoning will be tweaked.

Killer Klowns From Outer Space: The Game

The first time I saw this game was at Gamescom 2022. High time this asynchronous multiplayer game was released! Numerous weapons and gadgets are available on both sides, which should make for loads of multiplayer fun.

Arc Raiders

On a planet taken over by machines, it’s the Raiders’ job to find resources for the survivors. Arc Raiders is an extraction shooter with PvP and PvE elements. In other words, the game’s played against AI opponents as well as human enemies. And it looks incredibly fancy. Let’s hope it’s out this year.

Baby Steps

Remember QWOP? That totally daft but super fun game where you try to make a runner go as far as possible? You control him, or rather his limps, with the Q, W, O and P buttons making, which makes you look like you’re having muscle spasms. Baby Steps follows the same principles. It’s a walking simulator in the truest sense of the word. The only difference being that, instead of a boring rubber track, you’re exploring a foggy, mysterious world. This game was created by Ape Out developer Bennett Foddy, among others.
