Product details

The EF 1:1.8/50mm STM features an improved technical design over its predecessor. Canon's Super Spectra coating reduces side effects, while the 7-lamellar iris diaphragm produces a soft blur. The Stepping Motor (STM) provides continuous and virtually silent autofocus. Compact, lightweight, and affordable, the EF 1:1.8/50mm STM is a valuable addition to your camera bag.

With a high speed of 1:1.8, this lens allows precise control of depth of field, giving you the creative freedom to focus on the subject while immersing the rest of the image in a soft blur. This directs the viewer's gaze to a specific area of the image. Additionally, the large initial aperture makes it ideal for use in low-light conditions.

The 50 mm focal length, when combined with an EOS-DSLR with an APS-C camera, is well-suited for portrait photography. The EF 1:1.8/50mm STM is also practical for full-frame cameras, offering a natural-looking angle of view and corresponding perspective for various everyday tasks.

The lens has a close-up limit of only 35 cm, allowing you to get closer to the subject and achieve a higher reproduction scale. The 7-lamella iris diaphragm provides attractive light reflections with a blurred background. The improved image quality compared to the previous model is attributed to the Canon Super Spectra coating, which effectively reduces aperture reflections and stray light.

Weighing only 160 grams, the lens has a compact and lightweight design that fits easily into your camera bag without significantly adding to the overall weight of your equipment. The new design is compatible with both entry-level and semi-professional EOS cameras and features a metal lens bayonet for a robust connection to the camera body. Additionally, the manual focusing ring allows for precise control of the focal plane.

Rank 6 out of 21Stiftung Warentest21 Objektive 01/2016ReleaseJanuary 2016
