The blacktip reef shark is one of the three most common sharks inhabiting the coral reefs of the Indo-Pacific, alongside the grey reef shark and the whitetip reef shark. This species predominates in shallow habitats, while the other two are usually found in deeper waters. The fast-swimming and active blacktip reef shark can be found alone or in small groups; large social aggregations have also been observed.
