Based on the experiences with series 130 and 131, the design of series 132 was derived. The DR acquired 709 units of the optimized locomotive with electric heating from the locomotive factory in Woroschilowgrad, Soviet Union. The maximum speed was set at 120 km/h, and the power of the versatile machine was 3,000 horsepower.
