Asus shows the ROG Mjolnir at Computex
Do you fancy the god of thunder Thor and his hammer Mjolnir? With the latter, you will soon be able to ensure an uninterruptible power supply for your computer, for example. Asus officially unveiled the ROG Mjolnir at Computex 2024.
With an uninterruptible power supply (UPS), you can ensure that your devices such as a PC or NAS continue to run even during a power cut. This is practical, but the devices don't exactly evoke the same emotions as a new games console or Macbook. With the Mjolnir, Asus wants to change this, at least in terms of design. The UPS is actually reminiscent of Thor's hammer - but with a digital display and connections.
The handle is a magnetically attached torch that charges wirelessly. This is handy if there's a power cut at night and you need to find your way around the house. However, you won't be able to swing the hammer like Thor this way.
There are several connections in the head of the hammer. Three for three-pin power cables, two USB-A with 10 watts and two USB-C with 100 and 65 watts. The display shows you how much of the total of 768 watt hours (Wh) is left and how much power the connected devices are drawing. According to the manufacturer, a full charge of the lithium iron phosphate battery should make it possible to game for an hour on a PC with an RTX 4080 graphics card. As usual with a ROG device, RGB LEDs are also on board. Thanks to Qi 2.0, you can also charge compatible devices wirelessly.
In an emergency, i.e. if the power fails, Asus promises that the ROG Mjolnir will take over within 10 milliseconds. This guarantees that the power supply is actually uninterrupted. If you can't charge the hammer's battery from the mains, there is also the option of filling it with solar cells.
Asus has already teased the Mjolnir in April - with the note that this is not an April 1st joke. According to Asus, the device will be released in Q4 2024 or Q1 2025. It is unclear how much it will cost and whether there will be a version with a Swiss power plug.
