Edge 50 Ultra, Pro and Fusion: Motorola opts for wood, mother-of-pearl and faux leather
Wood, mother-of-pearl or artificial leather - Motorola wants to bring its latest Edge 50 Ultra, Pro and Fusion smartphones to the masses with more than just the technology. Special materials are used for some of the rear panels.
Regardless of the materials used, the three new smartphones from Motorola are all IP68 waterproof. The Edge 50 Ultra has the best features. In the Edge 50 Pro, the manufacturer saves on the processor and cameras. The Edge 50 Fusion also has a smaller display and wireless charging. However, they all have Android 14 on board.
The Edge 50 family will be the first smartphones whose cameras and displays have been validated by Pantone. The company, known for its colour fans and colours of the year, is said to help ensure that the smartphones "capture and display colours and skin tones exactly as you see them".
Edge 50 Ultra: Back to the wood
With the Edge 50 Ultra, Motorola is once again turning to wood. Real wood is used for the "Nordic Wood" colour variant. This is not a first, but it is a rarity. In the other two colours - including the Pantone colour of the year 2024 "Peach Fuzz" - the back of the smartphone is made of artificial leather. The front is protected by the scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass Victus.

The 6.7-inch OLED display has a resolution of 2712 × 1220 pixels and a refresh rate of 144 hertz. The Snapdragon 8S Gen 3 processor should provide plenty of computing power. Depending on the country, it is supported by 12 or 16 gigabytes of RAM. Motorola offers 512 gigabytes or 1 terabyte of internal storage.
The three cameras on the back are divided as follows:
- Main camera: 50 megapixels, f/1.6
- Ultra wide-angle camera: 50 megapixel, f/2.0
- telephoto camera: 64 megapixel, f/2.4, 3x optical zoom
There is also a 50-megapixel front camera with an f/1.9 aperture.
The battery of the Edge 50 Ultra has a capacity of 4500 mAh. It accepts up to 125 watts via Motorola's TurboPower fast charging technology. With wireless charging, it is up to 50 watts.
Edge 50 Pro: saving on processor and camera system
The Edge 50 Pro has the same display and the same battery - including charging technologies - as the Ultra model. The differences are obvious in the choice of colours, with Motorola using a mother-of-pearl polymer for the white-patterned variant. Black and lavender, on the other hand, are made of artificial leather.

The Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 and 12 gigabytes of RAM are waiting under the bonnet. The internal memory comprises 512 gigabytes. Motorola does not have any variants on sale here.
The Edge 50 Pro also inherits the front camera from the Ultra. However, there are several differences in the cameras on the back, which mainly affect the ultra-wide-angle and telephoto cameras:
- Main camera: 50 megapixels, f/1.4
- Ultra wide-angle camera: 13 megapixel, f/2.2
- telephoto camera: 10 megapixel, f/2.0, 3x optical zoom
Edge 50 Fusion: two cameras have to be enough
With the Edge 50 Fusion, you have to make do with slightly less resolution. Its 6.7-inch OLED display has a resolution of 2400 × 1080 pixels. However, the refresh rate remains high at up to 144 hertz. However, the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 is slightly older than in the Pro model. In this country, Motorola equips the smartphone with 12 gigabytes of RAM and 256 gigabytes of data storage.
Motorola has removed the telephoto camera from the Edge 50 Fusion. There are only two cameras on the back:
- Main camera: 50 megapixels, f/1.88
- Ultra wide-angle camera: 13 megapixels, f/2.2
The front camera has 32 megapixels and an aperture of f/2.45.
At 5000 mAh, the battery has a slightly larger capacity than the more expensive Edge 50 models. However, it charges with a maximum of 68 watts. Wireless charging is not possible.

The dark blue version of the Edge 50 Fusion has a plastic back. Motorola uses artificial leather for the other two colour variants.

As a primary school pupil, I used to sit in a friend's living room with many of my classmates to play the Super NES. Now I get my hands on the latest technology and test it for you. In recent years at Curved, Computer Bild and Netzwelt, now at Digitec and Galaxus.
