The name is attributed to the British writer Bruce Chatwin, who preferred the simple black notebooks from a French paper manufacturer in Tours for his work and affectionately called them Moleskin. In 1997, the anonymous notebook, which had been a vessel for sketches and stories of many artists and intellectuals, was revived by a Milanese publisher. He chose the literature-inspired name Moleskine.
